More Evidence: Actual Networking Beats Social Networking Everytime

by · November 30, 2007

Last month I shared some meager website analytics and other influence factors for Social Media Explorer that resulted from the real, live networking opportunity presented at SMX Social Media in New York. My post illustrated the importance of doing the ole’ grip-and-grin and how actual networking is more effective than social networking (which I’m defining as online networking) at building a blog’s success.

My November was highlighted by a fantastic experience networking at Blog World Expo in Las Vegas. There, I was able to network with a wider cadre of bloggers and influencers from around the social media space, talk about my blog and connect with several people I’ve admired and followed over the last few years. The metrics of that networking opportunity again show a considerable jump in the Influence Scorecard for Social Media Explorer.

Friendster Now Available In Spanish

by · November 29, 2007

Got a cute little thing in my email today:

El Friendster

That’s great! Now you can be a member of an online community with no pulse in two different languages.

My challenge to you is to comment with how you say the following phrases in Spanish:

1. Hello? Is anybody here?
2. I didn’t know a website could have rust.
3. Two words … “has” and “been”.
4. Oh, hi! Didn’t know anyone was around. I’m not on here much anymore. If you want to find me, friend me on Facebook.

Social Networking In Reverse And Local: LovinLounge.com

by · November 28, 2007

Initial social networking users went on-line looking for friends they knew but had lost. They were looking for members of established off-line networks and recreating the group in cyberspace. After we found a comfort level and established basic rules of engagement, we expanded our on-line networks and reached out to those of like mind and interest.

On-line networks have now become a dominant force in the lives of web users. I don’t know about you, but of the couple hundred or so folks I call a friend in all my social networks, I’ve probably only met half of them in person.

Why You Shouldn’t Trust Social Media To Search Marketers

by · November 26, 2007

As social media optimization continues its rise as a bona fide business objective, more and more professionals – marketers (traditional, digital and search), PR folks and even IT pros are claiming expertise and responsibility for it. Having attended a handful of seminars and conferences, it seems to me alleged social media experts are popping up from all walks of life and every imaginable discipline. Everyone wants to own it.

Thanks For The Influence

by · November 21, 2007

Thanksgiving is one of the few times a year I pause from my normal routine of sarcasm and savor moments, memories, friends and family. I suppose that’s the point of it all, but it’s easy to take things for granted and “suffer” through another holiday with annoying family members.

Water RippleSo, surprising to those who know me, being tagged by Ike Pigott in Kami Hyuse’s “Thanks for the Influence” meme is a welcome project as the holiday approaches.

And for the record, I have been promoted from eighth generation meme tag-ee to second generation (Kami started, tagged Ike, who tagged me.) so I’m moving up in the world. For that, I am thankful!

Thanksgiving, Daily Idea Style

by · November 21, 2007

Most of you know I don’t have much spare time. What little I do have normally is spent with my son, Grant, who is (I’m convinced) the reason I was put on earth. However, I do have a lot of fun working on The Daily Idea with Todd Earwood and Rob May, (and Jay and Chad and Nikki, too.) even occasionally making a cameo appearance.

Today’s Daily Idea, though, features a certain handsome portly man as the man-on-the-street interviewer. We wanted to have fun with the holiday and give everyone a little chuckle so Todd let me just be me and interview people. (I can assure you he edited heavily.) Enjoy!

Gydget.com’s Fan Widgets Offer Easy Brand Badge Building

by · November 20, 2007

Okay, so I got pitched. Being a PR guy by trade, I normally overlook mistakes of social media noobs and listen anyway. Then I’ll offer them a pointer or two on approaching bloggers to spread the education of social media outreach. (Most of these cute-talking, right-out-of-college PR chicks just say, “Okay!” and “I’ll make a note of that!” and ignore me, but I try.) I normally follow that up with, “I’m not really interested in your new car stereo remote control thingy, but thanks for the offer.”

What’s After Facebook Or Is The Migration Over?

by · November 19, 2007

No one really knows why birds migrate. Scientists can conjecture all they want, but until a Canadian goose pipes up and says, “Yeah, it’s because of food and a safe place to breed,” we can only guess. If that actually happens, my bet is migratory patterns will be the least of our worries.

Flock of BirdsLike birds, the flocks of social networking users tend to move from one place to another (though not often back) in our online environment. While the flock seems to have settled on Facebook recently, where shall we go next? My hypothesis is that we, too, are looking for food (connection to those of like mind) and a safe place to breed (privacy or freedom from the intrusion of marketing messages). But to analyze where we’re going, we must understand where we’ve been.

WebProNews Wraps Up BlogWorldExpo

by · November 17, 2007

Rob May, Todd Earwood and I had the good fortune of participating in an interview by WebProNews to give our thoughts on BlogWorldExpo last week. Since I was occupied and didn’t have a chance to sufficiently write a post wrapping up BWE my own self, and in a sudden fit of vanity, I thought I’d share.

And on a related note, the reporter, Abby Prince, is a fellow Morehead State alumn and radio-television major to boot. She is obviously the interesting one of the set.
