My annual Super Bowl party was partially hijacked a couple of years ago when the Colts won. A friend of mine, who happens to be a huge Colts fan except when the Cowboys are on (he’s also a lemming), decided after the AFC Championship game to have his own Super Bowl party and hijack half my guests. I haven’t spoken to him since other than text messages that read something like, “Nice move, Pac Man. You guys sure do know how to pick ‘em.”

Social Media for Restaurants

Let’s face it, it takes more for a restaurant to succeed then just knowing how to prepare the perfect Beef Wellington or serve the most trendy cocktail. It takes creativity not only in the kitchen, but also in knowing how to market your brand and connect with the customer.

I will admit that I am constantly intrigued by how restaurants can engage their customers by using social media. I often find myself thinking about how their owners can generate more buzz and create more loyal customers. These ideas have been scratched on napkins as well as dominated many conversations on the way home.

How Quantcast Can Help Bloggers And Public Relations

In the second of our short series on free ways to research website traffic, we’re taking a look at Quantcast today. This tool has become one of my favorite places to research websites and blogs as a public relations professional. There are many good things to say about Quantcast and I encourage you to go there, plug in some websites and see what you can see. However, Quantcast has one major drawback: A site owner has to volunteer to be measured by Quantcast, meaning if a blogger doesn’t install the Quantcast code on their site, you’re out of luck. Still, there’s a lot of good, so let’s dive in.

Tomorrow I have the honor of co-presenting the topic, “Building On-Line Community,” with Maker’s Mark president and CEO Bill Samuels Jr., to The Conference Board at its 2009 Corporate Imaging and Branding Conference in New York City. It’s a two-fold honor, the first being that I get to share the stage with Mr. Samuels, with whom I’ve had the pleasure of working for the past two years. The other is presenting for The Conference Board, a long-standing meeting point for corporate executives and marketers from the Fortune 500 world.

Humanizing Your Brand – One Customer at a Time

Recently, I was sitting at my favorite deli watching the news. Running across the bottom of the page was the latest updates of all the corporate layoffs. While I didn’t do the math, within just a few seconds I watched the news of close to fifty thousand people that had just lost their jobs.

That’s when I began to think about this quote, “either you evolve or you get left behind.” Now I don’t know every detail of their financials, or the purpose behind the layoffs. However, I did begin to wonder at what level were they engaging their customers? I also wanted to know if they had a “real-time” pulse on what their customers were saying and what was the loyalty level to their brand?

5 Ways to Make Your Website Mobile (And 1 Reason You Might Not Want To.)

As of August 2008, mobile handset penetration in Italy was at 140%.

You read that right: there are now more mobile devices than people in Italy.

According to Engadget, some studies are predicting 100% mobile phone penetration in the United States within 4 years; at present, it’s estimated at around 84%.  Some research indicates that as of 2008, as much as 3-10% of all web traffic comes from mobile devices.

So clearly, if your site is not accessible or easy to read via mobile devices, you’re missing a pretty large potential audience.

Determining Website Traffic Tool Review: Compete.com

Determining a website’s traffic is a tricky thing. To get completely accurate numbers, you need to contact the website owner and ask them for a traffic report. Since many website owners won’t volunteer such information, for a variety of reasons, some of which are valid, you’re left hoping someone has built a cool tool to save you.

Maybe you’re a public relations professional looking for high-trafficked sites for outreach. Perhaps you’re a media planner and buyer and want to get a hold on which blogs and other online media sites should be in your client’s plan. Whatever the reason, finding a tool to help you research a site’s traffic can be a Godsend.
