Great thoughts. While I do think someone can develop a community online over time, it makes more sense for most companies to think about the community they already have — their customers, venders, etc. And then, what you do with that community makes a difference.

We recently recovered a former client because while they forget about most vendors (once special projects come to an end), they could not forget our company. Why? They visit the blog. In other words, they may be silent, but they remain part of our community.

Thanks for your post Jason. You make some good points, but on the other hand the way you put it we all already have an off-line brand community. We all have family and friends that hopefully are our brand fans so in a way we are all already set to start using the online social tools one brand fan at the time.

Thanks Chuck. And great points all around. Those are three pretty solid steps for brands new to social media. And, if they participate with their core audiences first, the community will naturally happen.
