Comment Tracking Smackdown! Disqus versus Backtype

Over the last year, I’ve been pleased with how the social media diaspora has begun to return home to the humble blog.  As social media marketing has become more and more about “presence management” (hat tip to Chris Brogan), pulling all the divergent strands of discussion across the social internet into a coherent conversation stream has to be a priority for people who are serious about using the web as a communications channel.

One element that has always been a giant pain in the tupkiss  for conversation marketers is keeping track of comments and conversations on a variety of blogs on a single topic.  Today I’m going to look at two different solutions that promise to make comment and conversation management a little easier.

Disqus

disqus-screen

We use Disqus here on Social Media Explorer.  One of the early selling points of Disqus was the ability to do video comments.  While that seemed like an exciting prospect, we’ve only received a handful of video comments since installing the service.

But video comments are hardly the only reason to use Disqus.  Disqus has a fairly simple user interface.  The home page will show you all the comments you’ve made through Disqus.  You can also “friend” other people using Disqus, and view their comments, although the process for getting to the friend search is probably a little longer than it could be, and you have to search by email address, rather than name.

The Admin panel allows you to manage comments for the websites where you’ve installed the service, and control their appearance.  In addition to moderating comments, in the Settings subpanel, you can enable  ”social media reactions” (which pulls linked references to a post from Twitter, FriendFeed, Digg and YouTube), trackbacks, Seesmic video comments, and Facebook Connect (which allows  people to respond from Facebook).

The Tools subpanel allows you to create widgets that provide more information about what’s going on in your site’s community: who’s commenting most, what are the most popular threads, and the latest comments.  The Permissions subpanel allows you to do some “premoderating” of comments, but if you’re already using Wordpress for your CMS, there’s not much here that isn’t native to the Wordpress comment management utility.

Backtype

backtype-screenUnlike Disqus, Backtype appears to scan blogs that don’t have it’s service installed looking for your comments.  You can submit new blogs to include in its daily scan.  As with Disqus, you can follow and friend other commentors, and honestly, the People search feature is much faster and simpler.

That said, after registering with Backtype and dutifully entering my user names for several services (including Disqus), it still couldn’t seem to find my comments.  Once I plugged in this site, my own blog, and one other site where I’ve commented, it inexplicably showed all of Jason’s comments on SME under the heading “Comments by Kat French” on my profile page.   Also, on my Dashboard page, it seems to be attributing Jason’s comments to me (it was very odd seeing my profile pic over his name).

However, once I removed SME from “My Websites,” it started showing my comments and removed Jasons.  So it’s possible that my status as a moderator here through Disqus was scrambling Backtype’s brain a bit.

You can set up alerts, which appear to be almost exactly like Google Alerts, for the blogs that Backtype scans.

The Connect panel isn’t what I expected.  You enter the permalink for a particular post, and it shows you all the conversations going on that link or refer to that post among the blogs it scans.  This was actually pretty cool, as there was evidently a conversation going on about my “Ten Commandments of Content Marketing Post” that I wasn’t aware of till I plugged it in and searched.   There’s a bookmarklet for the Connect feature, which will allow you to look for those related discussions from any blog post.

The Subscriptions panel allows you to get either an RSS feed or email notifications whenever someone comments to any post you enter.

At first blush, it might seem like there is no install feature for Backtype, but after a little digging, I discovered that they’ve recently launched “Backtype for Wordpress,”  which apparently offers the same “pull comments from other social media sources” functionality that Disqus offers (at least, if you’re on a Wordpress blog.)

The Verdict

Of the two, Disqus is the more mature product.  Disqus also offers an installable solution for Blogger, Typepad, Tumblr, Movable Type, and a generic code that could work on nearly any blog platform, whereas Backtype at present is only installable on Wordpress.  Also, Backtype’s Connect doesn’t integrate Digg, Seesmic, YouTube, or more significantly, Facebook, in the way that Disqus does.  On the whole, I think Backtype’s user interface is a bit cleaner and more intuitive, but both are fairly solid.

They seem to have taken two different routes to comment aggregation, with Disqus being more reliant on users logging into their system, and Backtype being more dependent on its database of scan-worthy blogs.

My opinion at the moment is that Disqus is probably the better of the two for managing comments on your own site, but that Backtype may be the better solution for tracking your own comments off your own site.  Together, they make a powerful toolset for tracking your digital footprint and keeping all your online conversations straight.

  • Disqus also offers support for site run using Blogger, Tumblr, Movable Type and Type-pad. It also does customized work for integration with technologies such as Drupal.
  • Thanks Sophia. Appreciate the knowledge.
  • Love Disqus, it work good with FaceBook
  • thanks, great post
  • I personally like disqus as well. You are starting to see more and more of the bigger blogs using disqus and the interface makes it really easy to keep track of everything and maintain connections.
  • Well worth the read. Thanks for sharing this information. I got a chance to know about this.
  • You're welcome. Thanks for the comment.
  • I think Disqus is going to be the next best thing in commenting.

I'm planning to create my own blog pretty soon and I was thinking of using Disqus as my comment service. I've noticed that many bloggers compare Disqus to other services like JK-Kit and IntenseDebate. Still, out of all of them Disqus seems the only reliable commenting system. I mean, people can use their OpenID's, FaceBook or Twitter accounts. And even if they want to register with Disqus it's so easy.

  • Thanks for the comment, Evelyn. I use Disqus and they have done an
exceptional job of unifying comments from around the web about my
posts. Backtype is powerful as well, but you can't use them together.
Disqus actually takes over your comment data from Wordpress or similar
platform, so they aren't presently compatible.
  • evelyntiffany
I'll have to do some more research about that before getting my blog up. Thank you, Jason, for your reply!
  • Definitely one of the best programs available
  • Yeah, sure there is lot of programs available we have to search on proper way.

  • Thanks a lot I like it! it's amazing!
  • Great post. Thanks for you the information. I will pick up Backtype and start using that and continue to use DisQus because of their separate value added propositions.
  • Love Disqus, but I have a problem I can't figure out. I have a website with memberships using PHP/MySQL which is not a blog. I want to use Discus on this site for commenting and for Facebook Connect.
  • Hey, great post, very well written. You should blog more about this. I’ll definitely be subscribing.

  • I do agree that Diqus is far too ahead , compared to Back type as more companies opt for Social Media Marketing Package to boost their back links.

  • I haven't seen backtype before since a lot of people are into disqus or intense debate, but if backtype really was a competitive platform, it will surely stand out..

  • nice post, thanks for sharing
  • nice post, thanks for the share :)
  • I just added Disqus to my WordPress blog. I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts about whether using Disqus creates the problem of duplicate content for search engines, as what would have been posted once on one's site is now also posted on the discus site. Will this pose a duplicate content penalty problem? Maybe the way content is arranged and blended keeps this from happening.
  • We are about to install Disqus on our server! This is a Great post

    Tnx and keep it up
  • Great posting. I like this.
    Yeah !
Hopefully disqus will resolve the problem with the track back link.

Experiencing some issues with Facebook Connect in Disqus, even on this very page. Whenever I log in with my facebook account, it still shows the 'unclaimed/register with DISQUS' options below, along with a name, email and website. This means that I have to then type in the details before...
  • Nice post there. Raised a few things I hadn't thought about before. Thx.

  • Nice information you got here, now I know the difference between disqus and backtype.
  • Yeah ! disqus is really good plugin for blog comment posting.
  • I don't think both service should be compared. Backtype is a comment search engine while disqus is a comment management system. :(
  • Hi, interesting post. I have been thinking about this topic,so thanks for posting. I'll probably be coming back to your posts.
  • Disqus is the best commenting platform for wordpress with out a doubt. The video comments are great.
  • Hi, nice post. I have been wondering about this issue,so thanks for writing. I will certainly be subscribing to your posts.

I have to say I'm experiencing some issues with Facebook Connect in Disqus, even on this very page. Whenever I log in with my facebook account, it still shows the 'unclaimed/register with DISQUS' options below, along with a name, email and website. This means that I have to then type in the details before I can post! For this reason alone, I won't be integrating Disqus on my site, which is a real shame.

Just out of interest, though, it it possible to see the numbers of users on your site with Disqus? (By users I mean the number of unique visitors who have left comments.) I love the interface for seeing who's posted what, and where, but I couldn't seem to find any kind of count at al.

    Thanks!
  • LGLC
...and it didn't even post that from my facebook log in! Had to log in to Disqus :(
  • Wow !
Video commenting , i love it so much easy then typing :)
  • Seesmic video reply from Disqus.
  • I love Disqus and I love BackType (I've been a heavy proponent of BackType since it launched and met co-founder Chris Golda at Podcamp TO - nice guy and blogger's bets friend for sure!).

My problem is that I would love to have Disqus on my blog, but when I moved to Thesis and pimped it up, somehow it's ruined the enabling of Disqus comments and I can't get them working.

I can get IntenseDebate working, and Ajax options for threaded comments on the normal WP/Thesis comment form.

    But Disqus? No :(

Is Daniel Ha still in the neighbourhood...? ;-)

But yeah, great comparison, Kat, and as Mike himself said, pretty spot on. One thing I really like with BackType is the ConvoTrack widget they released alongside ImprovingTheWeb.

I have it installed on my blog and it really opens up the web to you.

So, um, yeah... Daniel Ha, Disqus, dannybrown.me? ;-)
  • Danny - Was wondering whether you ever got the Thesis / Disqus "issue" resolved? (I know you're now using Headway). Just installed Disqus yesterday afternoon on Thesis blog but comments on pages aren't appearing. They are IN Disqus and approved but now showing up on the page itself.

Just curious as I'm in problem solving mode.

    Cheers~Marian
  • Hi Marian,

I didn't, though I know Disqus works on Thesis as Chris Brogan and others uses that theme and Disqus. I just think there was some conflict with perhaps the coding aspect of some of the behind-the-scenes stuff I had on Thesis at the time.

If it's Pages as opposed to Posts, mind you, you might want to check that you have the option to "Post Comments to Pages" enabled. I don't (who wants to see comments on an About Page, for example?) but many folks do. Hope that makes sense? :)
  • Hi Danny,

Thanks for circling back so quickly. Just wanted to close the loop and let you know problem I described about "comments are closed" appearing on wordpress pages. There a line of code that needed to be added to the DISQUS.php file. Had to do some major digging to find this and thought I would share it here in case anyone else comes across this issue: http://bit.ly/3xFfg1 (the link best describes the problem and the specific line of code that needs to be added. Thanks to Tina Hunter)

You might catch Daniel here: http://twitter.com/danielha
  • Hey there Kat,

Thanks - I clicked on Daniel's name, went to his Disqus set-up and saw his online places - hopefully he can help. :)

Thanks again, and have a great Friday!
  • Found your interview on Michael Stelzner's blog and I really appreciate the insight and knowledge you graciously offer. Thank you. I am ready for my coaching practice to explode as I implement the excellent tools of social media marketing strategies you have given. I am so glad to have discovered you and your blog. I'll be looking forward to keeping you in the forefront of my info gathering processes.
  • Hi Kat,

Thanks so much for the post. Like you said using both services together makes for a pretty powerful toolset. For bloggers looking for all the features of a full comment replacement we definitely recommend Disqus and Intense Debate. Our recent WP plugin is not a replacement/hosted comment system -- it is designed to run on top of WP as an a way to pull in related conversations for those who do not choose a full comment replacement. BackType's main offering's are features unique from both Disqus and ID, specifically alerts, subscriptions, comment search, etc.

Really appreciate the feedback -- as you mentioned there isn't currently a way to distinguish between multiple authors using the same URL, but we're hoping to offer a solution soon. If you have any problems claiming your comments, let us know, we're constantly adding new properties.

    Thanks again.
  • KatFrench
Mike - Thanks so much for stopping by! Backtype is a great tool--will be looking forward to seeing how it develops.
  • I'm really impressed with Disqus. So much that I haven't even bother to check out BackType. Thanks for giving me a brief tour.
  • KatFrench
No problem, Brett. As I mentioned above, I think I actually like it better for tracking my offsite comments and conversations--and the Connect feature is really handy for figuring out who's biting when you put out a nice linkbaity conversation starter post. I see no reason not to use both for what each is best at.
  • Agreed. I have Disqus installed on my blog and briefly checked out Backtype but decided to stick with Disqus. The reasoning? More functionality, stability and more widespread adoption. Chris Brogan and Jason Falls use it. I might as well too.
  • You're such a name-dropping trollop, Foster.... ;-)
  • KatFrench
I think Disqus' lead time in user adoption is a big selling point.
  • Love Disqus, but I have a problem I can't figure out. I have a website with memberships using PHP/MySQL which is not a blog. I want to use Discus on this site for commenting and for Facebook Connect.

Does anyone know how to setup Discus on a standalone webpage with PHP/MySQL?
  • Email me for help: daniel@disqus.com
  • Thanks so much Daniel, I have sent you an email. Man, you guys are fast. Some sort of internal system to find all comments about Disqus??
  • Disqus trivia: I read every single comment that goes through.

    That's all I do. ;)

Daniel - Thanks for jumping in there with Jim's problem--you folks are really on the ball!
