Reminiscent of Billy Joel is a good thing? I think they said it all when they unanimously declared the Beatles superior to the Stones. Next.

Jason..doesnt social media go back a lot further than Green Day - to punk's real roots in fact? I prepped this 'punk and social media' clip for IABC World Conference and it's causing some lively debate down here in Australia:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LzR6pCdtoA
Keen to hear your take,
Gerry

I personally would've used Prince. ;-)

First you've got the "Controversy" era... which equates to social media's controversial beginnings and the sort of "lewd and licentious" stuff that was the hallmark of the early social web's veneer of anonymity and roots in hacker culture.

Then you've got the "Purple Rain" era where massive mainstream success allows new ground to be broken for others to follow and emulate... which equates to the period where corporate America discovered the commercial viability of social media.

After that, you've got the "artist formerly known as" O(+> era, which equates to the whole "personal branding" era, and also sort of directly relates to the move towards direct-distribution of music via the web that Jordan mentioned. It also speaks to the idea of creator-owned media rights, which is also very pertinent to social media creators, but that is a discussion that would go pretty far afield. Prince was WAY ahead of his time in moving to direct web-based distribution channels and away from the traditional artist/label scenario.

You've got the "Gold Experience" era, which sort of equates to the "group therapy" era you've described for Green Day. An era in which we get over our personal damage and the obsession with being "new and shiny," and begin producing mature, robust and satisfying solutions.

Lastly, if bloggers don't learn from Prince that artists and creatives need editors, I don't know what it would take to prove the point. Prince "freed" himself from his label, but without an unbiased editorial voice that's not on his own payroll, the quality of his creative output has never really recovered. I don't know how many times I've seen a really good blogger lose his/her edge when no one in the comments is willing to say "you missed the mark on this one." Surrounding yourself with lackeys and groupies is a sure route to loss in content quality.

An interesting and thought-provoking read, boss. :)

First you've got the “Controversy” era… which equates to social media's controversial beginnings and the sort of “lewd and licentious” stuff that was the hallmark of the early social web's veneer of anonymity and roots in hacker culture.

Then you've got the “Purple Rain” era where massive mainstream success allows new ground to be broken for others to follow and emulate… which equates to the period where corporate America discovered the commercial viability of social media.

After that, you've got the “artist formerly known as” O(+> era, which equates to the whole “personal branding” era, and also sort of directly relates to the move towards direct-distribution of music via the web that Jordan mentioned. It also speaks to the idea of creator-owned media rights, which is also very pertinent to social media creators, but that is a discussion that would go pretty far afield. Prince was WAY ahead of his time in moving to direct web-based distribution channels and away from the traditional artist/label scenario.

You've got the “Gold Experience” era, which sort of equates to the “group therapy” era you've described for Green Day. An era in which we get over our personal damage and the obsession with being “new and shiny,” and begin producing mature, robust and satisfying solutions.

Lastly, if bloggers don't learn from Prince that artists and creatives need editors, I don't know what it would take to prove the point. Prince “freed” himself from his label, but without an unbiased editorial voice that's not on his own payroll, the quality of his creative output has never really recovered.
Thanks Craig. I'll check out the Gaslight Anthem.

You're right. Social media forces companies to be nimble and move at the speed of the markets. But the strategic approach, if practiced well, accounts for that. The ones that truly get it are going to be just fine.
