Are Enterprise Companies Cheating Local?

by · September 28, 2012

When I sat down to chat with Zena Weist of Expion last week, we were going to talk about operationalizing social across the enterprise, transforming enterprise companies into social businesses — especially in franchise and multiple location scenarios and more. Zena is great to talk to about social marketing and social business. She has the unique perspective of having worked on the brand side, agency side and now the vendor side with Expion, a social media management solution.

Building A Customer Service Culture To Drive Profits

by · September 27, 2012

Yesterday’s SME Digital Power Panel discussion was a load of fun and full of insights and ideas. The slides and recording are below. We had a fun hour talking about how you can build a culture of service around your organization, use that culture to drive outstanding relationships with your customers and even measure return on the investment of building that culture.

Nichole Kelly and I hosted the talk which included guests Christa Foley (senior HR manager at Zappos), Corey Schreiber (Supervisor, Zappos Insights) and Frank Eliason (Senior Vice-President of Social Media at Citibank and author of the book @ Your Service.)

Using Humor In Your Marketing … Even In B2B Marketing

by · September 27, 2012

Think of the most memorable advertisements or even social media campaigns you’ve seen. Now think of how many of them are anchored in humor. A lot, right? When it’s funny, it gets shared. When it gets shared, it drives eyeballs, awareness and perhaps even conversions. But there’s a big challenge with using humor in your content. Humor is subjective. What’s funny to me may not be funny to you. Humor is also dangerous. There’s a fine line between funny and offensive, depending upon the subject matter.

How to Choose a Blogging Platform

by · September 26, 2012

According to Wikipedia, the term “blog” has been around since 1999. I’ve personally been blogging since 2004. Over the years, I’ve test-driven dozens of blogging platforms, including some social network/blogging hybrids like Tumblr and Posterous. Some of the blogging solutions I’ve used in that time are still around, while some have faded into “web 2.0″ oblivion.

Social Business Design [Infographic]

by · September 26, 2012

I’m fascinated by the evolving thought leadership around the subject of social business.

I believe in the idea that organizations adopting the use of social technology, flattening their corporate structure and making the shift towards less siloed communication and operational models will be in a better position to achieve their business objectives as the marketplace becomes more digitally connected.

As an idea or concept, social business is complex. The folks at Dachis Group offer this definition:

Toe-To-Toe With Ad Contrarian Bob Hoffman

by · September 24, 2012

At each of our Explore events, I schedule a Fireside Chat, interview-style session with a notable figure from the marketing industry. In Minneapolis last month, I had the honor of welcoming Bob Hoffman, CEO of Hoffman-Lewis and The Ad Contrarian. He’s been mightily critical of social media marketing and even digital marketing overall in the past and I thought it might be fun to bring an outside-the-echo chamber perspective to the table.

While I thought we’d spar a bit more than we did, my Q&A with him was far too interesting to not share, so we recorded the session, captured here in its entirety, for your enjoyment.
