Tomorrow all eyes will be focused on the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby: The fastest two minutes in sports. Here in Louisville, this event is not just a horse race, but a two-week celebration that ends with a spectacular event. This event is an opportunity for guests who visit the river city to experience southern hospitality, see the most creative array of hats and consume everyone’s favorite, the mint julep.

5 Steps to Social Media Grieving

At some point in our engagement in the social media space we step out on a limb and push the buttons of those within the community. The push back of the community can be unbearable if you are not prepared.

It begins as a brilliant idea that sparks an emotional response. These emotions ignite a fire that spreads throughout the community.  With a comment on a blog, a stream of Twitter messages and even a video reply on YouTube the fires rage to what you thought was a good idea. Your good idea backfires and now you have to deal with the consequences of what happens when good ideas go astray.

If you’re a hockey fan then this is your favorite time of the year. The season for you starts at the draft, works it’s way through training camp, peaks at the trading deadline, and then races to the start of the playoffs.

As a hockey fan, I’ve become intrigued by the marketing approach of the National Hockey League and its teams. It’s been interesting to see them implement social media initiatives to communicate and connect with their fan base. From Twitter profiles to Facebook fan pages and even audio and video podcasts, many teams have embraced social media 100 percent.

In my recent post, “How to Embrace the Process of Social Media” I communicated my ideas, “that the implementation of a social media strategy is a process more then just one or two events.” The engine that keeps that process moving forward is the discipline of being persistent.

How to Embrace the Process of Social Media

Creating “buzz” around your product, business or event is the demand from clients to all social media marketing strategists. The common question is, can you take or produce a piece of content and make it go viral?” Can you wave your social media marketing wand and make everyone want to read it? Can you also use the same trickery and create traffic for our website?

For many, these practices are this magical event that must be forced upon the viewer or reader so that everyone will talk about “their thing.” However, buzz isn’t an event, but a reaction to a process. That process doesn’t start with a video on YouTube, but with a marketing strategy that encompasses social media and word-of-mouth marketing both online and offline.

How to Maximize Your Social Media Interaction

Within the past week, Facebook has rolled out their latest redesign. While at first I wasn’t sure if I cared for the new format, after a week of using it, I’m really starting to like it. As a matter of fact, I like it better then any of the previous designs.

The most noticeable change is the filters and the real-time news feed. Being able to monitor these steams of text, photos and videos by the filters I have setup has been extremely useful. Being able to separate my friends by geography, niche, family etc. I am now finding Facebook more easy to use.

I must confess that this is probably the most favorite time of the year for me. This is the time of year when high school and college basketball is engaged in tournament play, the NBA and NHL teams are fighting for their chance to make the playoffs and Major League Baseball is getting ready for another season. If you’re a sports fan, like I am, March and April has to be the most exciting time of the year.

How Could Social Media Save Your Favorite Brand?

With the current economic crisis, it’s becoming very common to hear of large corporations who can no longer generate revenue to meet payroll and pay their vendors. Corporations that have generated billions of dollars as well as held large market shares are now fighting to stay alive. The question that dominates many conversations is, “who’s next?”

This afternoon while commuting home from the office, I was listening to my local public radio station. The show’s host was engaged in a conversation concerning the future of General Motors: its need for more government funding and the possibilities of what would happen if GM had to file for bankruptcy.
