The Trick Is Applying General Knowledge To Specific Needs

by · May 15, 2013

How does this apply to me?

That should be the question we ask when encountering learning about the digital marketing world. Whether you’re reading a blog, a book, attending a webinar or conference, the one thing you won’t likely get is advice and examples that are directly applicable to your specific business.

Conference speakers are generalists. People who write books are, too. Their job is to be informative and helpful but appeal to as broad an audience as possible. If I were to speak at an event about how to leverage Twitter in medium-sized floral shops, I would only help a few audience members. If the talk is how to leverage Twitter for any business — a general approach — there’s more appeal.

8 Takeaways From Portland Explore

by · November 20, 2012

Learning curves as steep as a wall. The impact of technology, especially the social tools, are changing the landscape of our lives, communities and commerce.  There is no doubt that the digital era is significantly shifting the marketplace across multiple functions forcing change to happen before success and sustainability can be experienced for any profession. As digital marketers who have an early adoption mindset to new technologies, we are not only faced with our own learning curve, but we are tasked to help usher others to climb.

Dear Portland …

by · November 12, 2012

Explore Portland is this week! And I can’t wait to see everyone. I’ll be in the fine state of Oregon tomorrow evening, visiting Eugene on Wednesday, back to attend the SMC PDX kickoff party on Wednesday night and then Explore Portland Thursday and Friday.

I want you to come! And it would be easy to sit here and write down how awesome the event is going to be and that you don’t want to miss it and so on, but I thought I’d just turn on the camera and tell you instead.

Is Hiring The Key To Social Success?

by · November 5, 2012

Few people know Scott Stratten, he of @Unmarketing fame and author of a book by that name and the new Book of Business Awesome, has a background in human resources. When you learn that, you typically, do a double take and think, “Wha?” But it’s true.

Scott and I caught up last week to talk about his upcoming keynote at Explore Portland (ticket form below) and wound up diving into a discussion about the feasibility of hiring being critical to your success as a social business and in social media marketing. In short, you can’t force awesome from unawesome employees. So hiring is a step in the process. Jump into the video and hear what Scott has to say:

4 Rules for Today’s Social Business Journey

by · October 22, 2012

What is the meaning of life? That is a loaded question. It’s like asking, “What is social business?” Ask 20 people the same question, you will get 200 different answers. Like life, social business is a journey.

Day by day, we venture forward. We look for ways to be happier. Search for the tools that will make our tasks easier.  Learn from the experience of our own and from leaders who we respect. Leaders who are inventive, who have implemented processes, developed practices and travelled afar to tell us about their stories.

Explore Portland: The Awesomeness Conference?

by · October 15, 2012

We’re one month to the day away from Explore Portland and boy, have we got two days of awesome in store for the Pacific Northwest. In fact, TODAY was supposed to be the last day for early bird registration, but we’ve added so much awesome to the lineup, I’m extending it until Friday so you can get that last-minute budget approval and get your butt to Portlandia.

Explore Portland is Thursday and Friday, Nov. 15-16 at the Embassy Suites Washington Square in Tigard, just south of Beaverton and a short ride from downtown Portland. (Ticket form below. Nice hotel deal on the main event page as well – The rate expires tomorrow, though, so get it now!)
