The Trick Is Applying General Knowledge To Specific Needs

by · May 15, 2013

How does this apply to me?

That should be the question we ask when encountering learning about the digital marketing world. Whether you’re reading a blog, a book, attending a webinar or conference, the one thing you won’t likely get is advice and examples that are directly applicable to your specific business.

Conference speakers are generalists. People who write books are, too. Their job is to be informative and helpful but appeal to as broad an audience as possible. If I were to speak at an event about how to leverage Twitter in medium-sized floral shops, I would only help a few audience members. If the talk is how to leverage Twitter for any business — a general approach — there’s more appeal.

For those of you going to South by Southwest, I’m happy to let you know the Friday evening Falls Shindig is on and this year, my new team at CafePress is sponsoring and providing some additional fun for everyone. It’s Friday, March 8, 2013 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. CT at Bourbon Girl on 6th (between San Jancinto and Brazos). Dear Portland …

by · November 12, 2012

Explore Portland is this week! And I can’t wait to see everyone. I’ll be in the fine state of Oregon tomorrow evening, visiting Eugene on Wednesday, back to attend the SMC PDX kickoff party on Wednesday night and then Explore Portland Thursday and Friday.

I want you to come! And it would be easy to sit here and write down how awesome the event is going to be and that you don’t want to miss it and so on, but I thought I’d just turn on the camera and tell you instead.

Explore Portland: The Awesomeness Conference?

by · October 15, 2012

We’re one month to the day away from Explore Portland and boy, have we got two days of awesome in store for the Pacific Northwest. In fact, TODAY was supposed to be the last day for early bird registration, but we’ve added so much awesome to the lineup, I’m extending it until Friday so you can get that last-minute budget approval and get your butt to Portlandia.

Explore Portland is Thursday and Friday, Nov. 15-16 at the Embassy Suites Washington Square in Tigard, just south of Beaverton and a short ride from downtown Portland. (Ticket form below. Nice hotel deal on the main event page as well – The rate expires tomorrow, though, so get it now!)

Are Enterprise Companies Cheating Local?

by · September 28, 2012

When I sat down to chat with Zena Weist of Expion last week, we were going to talk about operationalizing social across the enterprise, transforming enterprise companies into social businesses — especially in franchise and multiple location scenarios and more. Zena is great to talk to about social marketing and social business. She has the unique perspective of having worked on the brand side, agency side and now the vendor side with Expion, a social media management solution.

Using Humor In Your Marketing … Even In B2B Marketing

by · September 27, 2012

Think of the most memorable advertisements or even social media campaigns you’ve seen. Now think of how many of them are anchored in humor. A lot, right? When it’s funny, it gets shared. When it gets shared, it drives eyeballs, awareness and perhaps even conversions. But there’s a big challenge with using humor in your content. Humor is subjective. What’s funny to me may not be funny to you. Humor is also dangerous. There’s a fine line between funny and offensive, depending upon the subject matter.
