A couple weeks ago, we celebrated the second #GivingTuesday.

Donations doubled this year compared to last, and many nonprofits around the world saw a typically quiet Tuesday become a fundraising day!

TODAY Is #GivingTuesday

by · December 3, 2013

Anyone else sick of the endless stream of news stories about Black Friday and Cyber Monday? I know I am.

Yet, I have not seen a single news story about Giving Tuesday which is today!

It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Be a part of a national celebration of our great tradition of generosity.

Instead of only focusing in on how you can spend money on yourself and gifts for others, this day was created so you could take some of your energy and dollars and put them towards worthy causes.

Hey, Put Your Twitter Where Your Mouth Is

by · July 15, 2013

Attention pontificators of the interblogs! You know who you are. You take your 140 characters of Twitter genius and eviscerate those you disagree with while causing the masses to suddenly change their shallow opinions due to your amazing insights and prose. (Or something like that.)

And I count myself among you.

But no more! Today, it’s time to rise up and actually make a difference for charities and causes across our digital plain.

Today is Social Media Giving Day.

No Kid Hungry – #GivingTuesday

by · January 29, 2013

I’m currently reading The Dude and the Zen Master. It is a great read as you are allowed to be a fly on the wall for a series of conversations between two friends. One of them happens to be the actor and photographer Jeff Bridges who I’m a big fan of. They get into a big conversation about starving children in our country and the work he is doing as an ambassador for the No Kid Hungry campaign from Share our Strength.

The timing couldn’t have been better as I was getting ready to sit down and write this week’s #GivingTuesday post.

Amazing Things Will Happen if You Give to a Non-Profit Today

by · December 25, 2012

As many of us wind down for the holiday season it’s easy to focus on our time with our family, the wonderful gifts we’ve received and how annoying our mothers are. Family time is special and it should be celebrated. But it’s also a time when we are the most generous, so let’s use our generosity for some serious good. Today is not only Christmas, it is also #GivingTuesday. The Giving Tuesday movement was primarily created to provide a spotlight for giving around the Black Friday Shopping craze and it was certainly successful as reports show a 42% increase in online giving during that time. However, I think Giving Tuesday could be something much bigger and it’s time to think about putting more thought to our giving than just throwing $100 at a charity at the end of the year (though this is a great way to make up for not giving throughout 2012…hint…hint). What if we all gave $10 to a charity every Tuesday? What impact would that have? Well to start we would increase our total donations to $520 a year. Imagine how big of a difference that $420 could make. Imagine the difference a 420% increase in giving could make if it caught on and it wasn’t just you and I, but it was the entire readership of Social Media Explorer? Now that’s a movement that could have a huge impact.
