The Jedi’s Guide To Content Marketing Success

by · January 30, 2012

As you know, Copyblogger‘s Brian Clark will serve as the opening keynote for Explore Dallas-Fort Worth on Feb. 17 in Dallas, Texas. Register now so you don’t miss out on the full day’s content and networking that I’ve started saying is a, “no-frills, learn-your-ass-off digital marketing event.” But his opening keynote will surprise many. It’s a new talk and one that I’m going to be taking a lot of notes from as well.

Brian’s talk is called, “The Star Wars Guide To Online Marketing Success.” I’m sure we’ll all get a kick, as well as some great knowledge from him. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say Brian is a content marketing and internet marketing Jedi.

10 Better Ideas Than Looking at a Top 10 List for Advice

by · January 10, 2012

Top 10 lists are like new year’s resolutions. They seem great at first, but they quickly make you feel bored, hopeless, and like you’ve wasted your time.

And that’s usually because they are filled with things you know you should do but can’t commit to doing. They’re too aspirational. Too shoot-for-the-moon-y.

Which is why I’ve kept this one bare-bones, tactical, and hopefully useful for you beyond the 4 days it typically takes us to crash and burn through our empty new year promises.

The Content Strategy Burger [Infographic]

by · December 8, 2011

A good content marketing plan contains a number of different elements including theme, audience, tone, publishing channel, etc. But how do all of these components come together to form a cohesive strategy?

After reading 6 Layers of Social Media Content Strategy by Jeffrey Cohen over at Radian6, I was inspired to create a visual metaphor that assembles all these content marketing ingredients.

Although I agree with the layers discussed in Jeffrey’s post, I have a slightly different view about what makes up the ‘meat’ of an effective content strategy. Check out the inforgraphic and read the Radian6 post.

A Business Can’t Be Social

by · December 1, 2011

A business is a legal entity.  Only the individual people within the business can engage in social media. That’s why, several weeks ago, I wrote about the major shift in thinking and behavior needed for a business to be successful in social media.

I’d like to take a deeper look into one of those areas: hiring and training everyone in the organization in the age of social media.

by · November 15, 2011

It’s that most wonderful time of the year … time to predict the future as we close out the year! I think my 2011 social media predictions were pretty solid, so I’m going to take another stab at it for 2012. Here are the five social media trends I think marketers need to be aware of in the next year as we grow and change along with technology and consumer demand.

Social Media Success In 40 seconds Or Less

by · November 8, 2011

I was waiting for friends to meet me for lunch near Union Square the other day. The place was getting crowded, so I sat at the bar to wait.  Chatting with the bartender, the inevitable “what do you do” question came up. He, like many New York City bartenders and wait staff, was an actor. I mentioned that that I’m involved in social media.

In between tending to newcomers at the bar, he asked me,

“What do you think I could do to get my name out there using social media?”

Education Is The New Marketing

by · October 19, 2011

The internet has democratized education and businesses should take notice.  You are in business because you have some area of expertise.  Sharing your expertise is a way to help you build your brand and provide value. By using a combination of digital and offline tools, business can take advantage of the opportunity to add teaching to the marketing mix.

I’ve been reading The Education of Millionaires, a book by Michael Ellsberg that proposes that the best investment in education is one that offers lifelong, relevant knowledge that will make you financially successful.  He urges people to find mentors and experts to teach the skills they need, rather than investing six figures in a traditional college education that is unlikely to contribute to their ability to earn a living.

The Future of Content in SEO

by · October 7, 2011

Editor’s Note: This is a guest post by John Schulenburg, Director of SEO for Red Bricks Media.

Remember the old line “content is king”? For a long time in the SEO community we thought it was that easy.  Create good content and they (traffic, social, rankings) will come.  But is that still true with the rise of social, local and personalized search?  What about the recent Google Panda update?  Content “farming” as it’s called, was hit pretty hard by the Panda update and now companies are having to refocus their entire view of content creation as a viable SEO strategy.  There’s a big case for internet marketers to take their focus away from content since there are signs that content isn’t exactly “king” anymore.

The Business of Infographics

by · October 5, 2011

A picture is worth a thousand words. In the digital age, the saying has never been more relevant. To cope with the daily onslaught of information we’ve become content grazers, skimming headlines and post descriptions for the promise of bite-sized nuggets of information.

As brevity becomes more important, infographics present brand journalists with a great opportunity to deliver knowledge, ideas, solutions, etc., in a manner that can be quickly consumed, understood and remembered.

Robin Richards, Information Design Director at the creative firm JESS3, says this about infographics:
