It doesn’t matter what venue you choose to attend, there’s a common question that someone will be asking, “how do I get more traffic to my web site?” Which is often time followed up by the second question, “how can I make more money with my web site?”

The answer to these types of questions aren’t found hidden within the hard drive of your favorite influential blogger, but are revealed from a core of principles and disciplines. If you’re consistent in these practices, you can watch your readership grow and traffic increase.

With the current economic crisis, it’s becoming very common to hear of large corporations who can no longer generate revenue to meet payroll and pay their vendors. Corporations that have generated billions of dollars as well as held large market shares are now fighting to stay alive. The question that dominates many conversations is, “who’s next?”

This afternoon while commuting home from the office, I was listening to my local public radio station. The show’s host was engaged in a conversation concerning the future of General Motors: its need for more government funding and the possibilities of what would happen if GM had to file for bankruptcy.

Quantifying Digg Popularity

by · February 20, 2008

DiggUnderstanding social news communities and how they work is paramount to defining the meaning life. You’re not going to nail it because it’s an evolving answer. But, like the meaning of life (i.e. religion, philosophy, Pink Floyd, etc.) there are always going to be folks trying to frame social news communities, behavior and success.

Dan Zarrella is a digital colleague I’ve come to know by participating on social news sites. He is one such person who is adding to the social media world today with an interesting report and some nifty little tools to better understand social news submissions on Digg.com. Dan’s report, entitled, “Link Attraction Factors” (click title for a PDF download) looks at articles that made the front page of Digg and which produced the most inbound links as a result.

New Social Bookmarking Submission Tool Worth Trying

by · January 5, 2008

My friend Brendan Picha from Squareoak has developed a new social bookmarking/social news tool to help submit your favorite stuff to multiple sites. It’s in beta and worth giving a try at PostToaster.com.

PostToaster Screen Shot This isn’t a new concept. I’ve been using SocialMarker.com for quite some time now but it hasn’t been quick enough in adding relevant new sites (like Mixx where I learned of Brendan’s new thing). In order to submit to more than my standard array of Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, Faves and del.icio.us, I have to submit separately for Mixx and Sphinn. As such, my Mixx and Sphinn submissions are few and far between.

Are Marketers Welcome On Social News Sites?

by · December 17, 2007

On Friday morning, I submitted Chris Brogan’s, “Marketing Is NOT Social Media – Social Media Is NOT Marketing” post to my normal round of social news sites. Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, Mixx and Sphinn are my normal stops as I try to contribute content of value to those communities. Occasionally, I’ll add del.icio.us to the list if it’s an article I may want to go find easily for reference.

Mmmmm … gravyWhile I didn’t consider Chris’s analysis of social media as a marketing tool a particularly controversial subject, the article produced a passionate response from one of my new friends on Mixx, Jay Fowler.

Digg Adds Images, New Categories

by · December 3, 2007

Digg will unveil an images section as well as a few new categories tonight according to a Digg blog post by Kevin Rose. The submission of images will include a crawler that presents up to 10 images from the page for you to choose from.

DiggThe new topics include “Offbeat” and a new “Lifestyle” categorie including food, drink and travel.

Nice bell and whistle addition to the site, seeing how Mixx and others are digging at the motherload’s audience.

Duping Digg Hot Topic At SMX Social Media

by · October 16, 2007

Digg.com was the primary topic of discussion at SMX Social Media Tuesday and why not? In Chris Winfield‘s words, “Digg is all that anybody cares about.”

The comments and the vibes I got from the discussion, mostly the “Extra! Extra! The Social News Sites” panel featuring Winfield, Neil Patel and Tamar Weinberg, were, however, a little contradicting to what I consider the generally agreed upon appropriate approach to social media.
