Expanding Social Media Explorer

by · September 5, 2011

This week marks the fourth anniversary of Social Media Explorer, the blog. SME became a consultancy just over two years ago. Today, we enter a new era in what SME is as a company and its mission.

Last Thursday, Social Media Explorer officially acquired TechSMO, the consultancy of Aaron Marshall, another Louisville-based digital marketing consultant. Aaron is now SME’s chief product officer. While not wire-service news in the mergers and acquisitions world, we’re excited about taking Social Media Explorer from a consultancy to a company. And we’ve put some more definition to what we are. See more press release-type info with our release.

Three Companies, Three Events For SXSW

by · March 8, 2011

Geek Super Bowl is this week. South by Southwest Interactive in Austin, Texas, brings the technology, social media and marketing worlds together in a five-day fit of networking insanity that is hands down the biggest event in the business I’m in. And I’ll be there in full force as usual, but with a little different focus this year.

The second largest state, Texas, is only 40% o...

What The Exploring Social Media Product Roadmap Looks Like

by · February 17, 2011

Since the launch of Exploring Social Media, I’ve had dozens of people ask me questions about where I’m going with this thing. It’s as if suddenly launching a product and being an entrepreneur outside of “just a consultant” suddenly means I’ve changed.

Sorry to disappoint, but I’m still the same guy. My goal is to help people understand the world of digital marketing, social media marketing and online communications a little better. Whether you’re trying to communicate with your kids (or grandkids) on Facebook or drive revenue for your business by connecting with customers online, I want to help those that don’t know much about it know more.

What I’m Doing To Bridge The Gap: Exploring Social Media

by · January 31, 2011

At a trade show in Ft. Worth last week, I probably talked to 150 people, one-on-one, about digital marketing. These folks were small business owners, managers at medium sized businesses and there were even a handful of marketing executives at some large companies mixed in there, too. The conference was a retailer’s trade show put on by a wholesaler in a specific industry. It was not an Internet marketing conference.

Some of the people I talked to were using social media marketing for their businesses. Others would say, “I have a website and even do some e-commerce.” And about one-third of the people I talked to said (you may want to sit down), “I don’t have a website.”

Survey: Online Learning And Social Media

by · October 2, 2009

I soft-launched a little survey on Twitter earlier this week, but wanted to make sure that those who weren’t watching at that moment (or didn’t see retweets, etc.) got an invite, too. I’m doing a simple, less than five minute survey around the topic of online learning as it relates to social media. You can take it by clicking here to visit the survey page.

Doug Stevens on Shutterstock.comThe thought behind this is that I hope to begin offering some premium value webinar-type content to folks soon. These would be paid offerings. Think of them as intensive learning sessions, everything from 101 stuff to advanced thinking around social media strategies. The thoughts I share on the blog and my newsletter would remain free.

Adding Value To Social Media Explorer

New logo on our newsletter

Starting next month, I’m going to publish a newsletter. My hope is that there are a few of you out there who want more than just the blog topics that come to mind for me each week. Plus, there are times when I’m given discount codes to conferences, free copies of books and other items I can make available to my readers. The newsletter gives me the opportunity to reward those who go the extra mile, in a sense.
