Forrester Report Offers Analyst Look at Social Media ROI

Forrester Research has produced another interesting report, this one focusing on perhaps the hottest topic of the social media world over the past year: The ROI of Social Media Marketing. The piece, primarily authored by Forrester analyst and friend Augie Ray, offers what Forrester calls a balanced scorecard for measuring the ROI of social media, complete with expected Forrester graphics and interview-based insights.

Apparently, It Was All About The Conversation

Forrester Research’s Social Technographics Ladder has been the cornerstone of many social media marketing efforts constructed in the last few years. The inactives-to-creators rating of how people use social media essentially shows that most people are either inactive or watch the social web; a few join networks; some collect content; a few (about the same number who join) play critic, commenting on other’s works; and a small number actually create content.

Where Interactive Marketing Dollars Are Going

Forrester Research has released a new report forecasting interactive marketing spend in the U.S. for the next five years. The report, authored by Shar VanBoskirk, is available in its entirety on the Forrester Research website.

The report details how certain industries currently spend, and projects how they will spend, on interactive marketing. It also offers some interesting insights for businesses trying to ensure they are either catching, or keeping up with the Joneses. VanBoskirk talks more about it on the Forrester Research blog for Interactive Marketing Professionals.

Reading Through The Statistics On Social Media

With the world’s rush to quantify and understand more about social media, social networking and the like, more companies are diving in to research in the social space. Forrester Research isn’t the only one, though their recent Broad Reach of Social Technologies from Sean Corcoran provided confirmation, if anything else, that more people are using social tools and all this talk about social media isn’t for naught.

The ever-present and seemingly omniscient Jeremiah Owyang has authored another report from Forrester well worth reading. “The Future of the Social Web,” was released to Forrester clients on April 27. You can purchase the report or become a client on their website.

Owyang, along with editors and co-authors Josh Bernoff, Cynthia Pflaum and Emily Bowen, essentially cover the immediate future of the social web to which businesses need to focus with regard to OpenID. The report surmises, in essence, that today’s customer and business experience is frustrating because profile information varies from site to service and beyond. OpenID platforms like Facebook Connect offer data portability for individual identities. Essentially, you log in to one network and it carries your credentials through to other networks and unifies your social footprint.

SXSW Sunday

The problem with conferences like South by Southwest (SXSW) is that you need 36 hours in a day. When Shawn Morton, Richard McInnis and I got on the elevator last night with Robert Scoble and Rocky Barbanica, Smorty very eloquently pointed out we needed to account for daylight savings time and spring forward. You could see the last threads of enthusiasm sputtering out of Scoble’s body. The guy was exhausted and that additional hour of sleep would have done us all good.
