You Are One Hire Away From A World-Class Marketing Team

by · January 11, 2012

Reading Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs, I was struck by the story of something that happened to him in elementary school.  Jobs was, of course, a brilliant child and, not surprisingly, he was very bored with his education.  He entertained himself by playing pranks that caused increasingly more trouble as they become more complex and were able to fool more and more people. Finally, in fourth grade, his principal realized that something needed to be done.  Jobs was moved to an advanced class with a new teacher.

He described that teacher to his biographer as “one of the saints of my life.”

The First Step In Creating A Social Media Content Strategy

by · July 6, 2011

A question that new users of social media often ask is, “I hear that content is king, but what kind of content should I be producing?”  The conventional wisdom in marketing is: first figure out your objectives, then plan a strategy and finally develop the tactics.  Then, the theory goes, you get customers — and that’s when you take care of them.  After all, look at the time, effort and money you spent.  Of course you have to show them you care, or you’ll lose your valuable assets!

Vaynerchuk’s Thank You Economy Hits Stores This Week

by · March 5, 2011

When Gary Vaynerchuk asked if I would review his new book, The Thank You Economy, last week, I was cautiously optimistic I could even finish it in time to review before it hits shelves this Wednesday. I was also cautiously optimistic I’d like it. Not only did I finish it, but I loved it. And recommend you read it, too. Here’s my review:

Thank you, Gary, for writing this book and for firing us all up again. And thanks for bringing some more depth to the table with this effort. I was pleasantly surprised at the research and case studies presented and think the business audience is going to get a lot out of this. I’m glad I got to read it. Thank you!

Social Media Success Tips Come Straight To Your Office

by · April 20, 2009

It is easy to mistake conferences for excuses to party these days. It seems for every Twitter message or blog post that references learnings gathered in sessions or insights shared by speakers there are a dozen referencing some affiliated social gathering in the evenings. Certainly, I’ve contributed to that imbalance at fun reunions of friends like South by Southwest or Blog World & New Media Expo, my two favorite conferences.
