How To Build Social Media Awareness Into Your Website

by · March 9, 2011

An old man is approached by a traveler. He’s asked how to get to Dublin. The old man replies: “I sure wouldn’t start from here.” As a web analyst I’m occasionally tempted to use that line. It happens when I’m brought into a project long after a site is launched and I’m asked to report on user behavior the site just wasn’t built to measure.

Increasingly the metrics requested are of user engagement, related to social media conversations surround the site content. If my client is lucky I’m able retrofit a solution, but it’s always best to plan for these from the start. Here’s how. I’ve drafted a short list of considerations for you as you prepare for your next site or site redesign.

The Missed Opportunity Of LinkedIn

by · September 27, 2010

I heard a lady say last week that she and her company had given up on LinkedIn. They started a group and it was going no where. She said the only people who were participating in the group were her competitors and frankly, her company wasn’t there to play with them. While I don’t know the details of her particular situation, I’ve run into this issue before.

Most companies interested in LinkedIn start a group about their company, then maybe a group about what they do. So if you’re an accounting firm, you start a group about accounting. The problem is that your prospective customers probably don’t go to LinkedIn looking for accountants to hang out with. They go looking for people like them.

How To Make LinkedIn Answers Part Of Your Routine

by · June 16, 2010

Using LinkedIn Answers is probably one of the most effective, yet under-used ways to build credibility and generate qualified leads using social media. I’m even guilty of focusing my efforts on other social networks, despite the fact that what I do, by definition, is B2B. I work with companies, not consumers. And LinkedIn is a more natural environment for B2B lead generation.

Why? LinkedIn is business in the front and back. No party here. Sorry, Billy Ray.

Thursday morning, I had the honor of appearing on the WHAS-TV morning show here in Louisville to join Andy Treinen and Rachel Platt to talk about how social networking and social media can help people find and better position themselves for jobs in a difficult economy. It’s exciting to see the local media getting interested in and excited about covering social media.

LinkedIn Functionality Available In Facebook App

by · September 25, 2007

NOTE: Since this blog is only in its infancy (not appropriately skinned, etc.), I posted this on my PR blog, The Straight Pitch. It is an appropriate repost here, however.

There was a certain irony in The Straight Pitch receiving its first PR pitch Tuesday. While I suppose there is a nugget of hope in the back of my mind I might one day qualify as a blogger people pitch story ideas to, the notion never really crossed my mind since I help provide pitching advice to PR folks.

Exploring Social Media?

by · September 24, 2007

Doe AndersonMuch of the impetus for this blog stemmed from a series of discussions I had with Crystal Peterson, Doe Anderson’s Senior Vice President and Director of Human Resources, concerning the separation between online activity of a professional nature and that of a personal one. We both agree it is largely uncharted territory from both an employee rights and an employer per view perspective.

Crystal will be guest authoring on the subject here soon as she and I are working together to develop a spring presentation she will be giving to a group of area young advertising professionals. As we at Doe Anderson begin to develop both company policies and advice on the matters for our clients, I’m sure we’ll discuss, debate and converse about them here.
