Skip The Fluff Puff Marketing And Fix What’s Broken

by · April 12, 2011

I have thought for some time that the impending social media bubble will at some point burst. I am a true believer that digital marketing done right will drive sales, however folks can get sidetracked pretty fast. That, coupled with many marketers delusional perception of success, and things can get pretty murky.

One must have a keen understanding of why the business is marketing in the first place, to sell more stuff. That’s it. Most of the other yap you are doing is fluff puff marketing and both it and you could go away and no one would notice … except the person who’s job it is to do the tasks that might get eliminated.

Is your Agency Social? You better find out soon!

by · April 1, 2011

I recently conducted an interesting test. I was interested in finding a public relations firm that really “got” social and could help integrate some social media and PR strategies.

So, I sent a tweet. It was something to the affect of…”Does anyone know of any good PR firms that really get social? #PR #socialPR #publicrelations”

by · February 19, 2011

Editor’s Note: This is a guest post by Cam Lay, Director of Marketing for Yodle, a leading provider of local online advertising.

Before you can establish an online advertising plan for your local business, you need a few key marketing basics in place.  After you have that, you’ll know that you know what you need to know (follow that?), and your plan will be grounded firmly in reality and primed for success.  Although most of these basics hold true for traditional media advertising, the beauty of online advertising is that you can test it quickly and affordably —and make adjustments to your mix or your message in almost real time.  Here are the six building-block tasks that any serious marketer has to tackle:

Three Marketing Trends for 2011

by · January 5, 2011

Editor’s Note: The following is a guest post from Ilana Rabinowitz, Vice-President of Marketing for Lion Brand Yarn Company.

These three concepts are not new – in fact they are age-old techniques that merchants have used whenever they came to public markets to sell their wares and stood face-to-face with the customer. For a while, in the era of mass media, these vital elements were lost, but now, digital marketing tools like websites and social media give us the opportunity to recapture elements of that personal relationship.

Outside the Fishbowl

by · December 2, 2010

Businesses are all about their business. Otherwise they would be hobbies or activities.

When you get to the realm of Tweeters and TheFacebook and all of the bright and shiny YouTubes, businesses have a bottom line they have to meet, and they don’t always have time to do the research they need to stay on top of trends.

We’re talking about people who don’t have time to check in at Mashable or AllFacebook, and executives who aren’t interested in knowing the difference between CoTweet and HootSuite and RePeet and whatever else emerges tomorrow.

Is Content Marketing The New Advertising?

by · November 9, 2010

As a business owner who was typically on the buying end of advertising and marketing, but now on the selling end, it is pretty fascinating to watch what is occurring in Social Media Land. A couple of encounters this week that continue to resonate that the winds of Advertising and Marketing continue to change.

The Winds Have Shifted

It sure seems like the average small ad agency guys are scrambling. This post isn’t about agency bashing, although I am not much of a fan, nor is it about traditional marketing and advertising going away, because it isn’t. This post is about numbers.

Sweaty Armpits and Social Media Authenticity

by · November 3, 2010

We’ve all had it happen before. Maybe on the way to a job interview, on a first date, it might even be happening to you right now. Sometimes there’s a good reason, but sometimes it just sneaks up on you and bam, there it is: sweaty armpits.

Those pit stains are like your mistakes in social media. It happens fast; it’s embarrassing; and there’s no way to cover it up.

It’s also 100% natural. And it happens to everyone. The question is? How do you react?

Stop Hiding it. You’re Only Making it Worse

One Pixel Of Separation With Twist Image’s Mitch Joel

by · January 6, 2010

There are people I’m a fan of and people I am friends with and then there are the rare combinations of people I’m a fan of who I’m lucky enough to be friends with. Mitch Joel is one of them. The author of the recently released Six Pixels of Separation is also the principal of Twist Image, a cutting edge digital marketing shop with offices in Montreal and Toronto. His book is phenomenal and his thoughts on social media, online advertising, Internet marketing and online engagement place him squarely in the middle of thought leadership in the space.
