Fast Company Leads Off With Microcommunity Home Run

by · February 9, 2008

Logging into Fast Company’s new online community (fastcompany.com now in public beta) a few weeks ago was a neat perk of having a social media friend at a big company. I took my head start, got in, played around for a few hours, liked what I saw, then moved on to something else, forgetting to come back to it. Silly me.FastCompany.com screen shotShel  Israel’s post Friday reminded me I was a member of the Fast Company community and I should go back and see if I could find more friends that might start hanging out there, producing content, sharing ideas and all the things that come from social networks.

Twitter Aftershocks: What To Do With The Conversation Now

by · December 12, 2007

Todd Earwood and I were discussing the impressive influx of new followers we both received yesterday in the aftershock of Jeremiah Owyang’s Twitter Conversations explosion yesterday. Jeremiah asked folks interested in more connection and conversation to leave their Twitter ID and topics they were interested on his post. As of 1:20 a.m. this morning, there were 323 comments. Hence, Twitter Tuesday.

Several folks are blogging about it today or did last night, including a long time Twitter friend Doug Haslem, and folks I’ve not yet met but want to like David Armano, Nick O’Neill and Gavin Heaton.

More Evidence: Actual Networking Beats Social Networking Everytime

by · November 30, 2007

Last month I shared some meager website analytics and other influence factors for Social Media Explorer that resulted from the real, live networking opportunity presented at SMX Social Media in New York. My post illustrated the importance of doing the ole’ grip-and-grin and how actual networking is more effective than social networking (which I’m defining as online networking) at building a blog’s success.

My November was highlighted by a fantastic experience networking at Blog World Expo in Las Vegas. There, I was able to network with a wider cadre of bloggers and influencers from around the social media space, talk about my blog and connect with several people I’ve admired and followed over the last few years. The metrics of that networking opportunity again show a considerable jump in the Influence Scorecard for Social Media Explorer.

What’s After Facebook Or Is The Migration Over?

by · November 19, 2007

No one really knows why birds migrate. Scientists can conjecture all they want, but until a Canadian goose pipes up and says, “Yeah, it’s because of food and a safe place to breed,” we can only guess. If that actually happens, my bet is migratory patterns will be the least of our worries.

Flock of BirdsLike birds, the flocks of social networking users tend to move from one place to another (though not often back) in our online environment. While the flock seems to have settled on Facebook recently, where shall we go next? My hypothesis is that we, too, are looking for food (connection to those of like mind) and a safe place to breed (privacy or freedom from the intrusion of marketing messages). But to analyze where we’re going, we must understand where we’ve been.

BWE Vegas: How To Cash In Your Networking Chips

by · November 7, 2007

Aidan Jones’s “Shaking Hands”So I’m on the plane headed to Vegas for Blog World Expo and realize that, while I’ve made some preliminary plans to meet up with some cool folks, the craziness of next week (cheap foreshadowing, but teasing … bad Jason) has prevented me from making a solid plan of attack for playing my cards wisely and racking up on network growth. But the thought occurred I don’t have to lock in a meet-and-greet schedule to connect with important or cool people.

So what’s the conference attendee formula for winging your way through the game and racking in the friendship chips? Here are the five things that will help me at BWE this week:

Why Networking Socially Beats Social Networking Every Time

by · October 31, 2007

Add friends, send Digg shouts, use the @Twitter function all you want, the real way to grow your blog, business or network of contacts is to pry yourself away from the keyboard, the PDA and interact with other human beings.

MiltonYes, Milton, this mean’s you.

As I ready for Blog World & New Media Expo next week in Las Vegas, I’m compelled to follow good advice and make a list of folks I want to meet, even if it is just for coffee, a cocktail or a handshake and face-to-name connection in the hallway. Even if I do have the advantage of accompanying super blogger Rob May and entrepreneurial whiz Todd Earwood for easy introductions, there are folks I want to connect with that might be scared off by Earwood.

8 Things Conference Officials Don’t Advertise

by · October 19, 2007

Having recently returned from SMX Social Media and gearing up for Blog World Expo and Executing Social Media – yes, I’m going to be conferenced out by Thanksgiving – you could say much of my spare thought has centered around conferences, networking and the like. Many of my SMX friends have posted recaps, thoughts, and opinions about the event that are far better than anything I could offer, but the subject matter of conferences in general is top-of-mind.

Could The Future Of Online Networking Be Offline?

by · October 4, 2007

Despite my fear of giving away pertinent insight, this blog post was necessary to prevent by feeble brain from imploding. While discussing the explosion of social media and networking trends of Web 2.0 with a client today, I took pause to think about what Web 3.0 might look like. My vision might actually be Web 4.0 or 5.0, but what I see isn’t what my techno-geek friends probably anticipate.

SMX Social Media To Provide Actual Networking

by · October 2, 2007

SMX Social MediaBrowsing the web tonight I checked in at Search Engine Land to read Danny Sullivan’s preview of the upcoming Wikipedia Clinic he’s leading at SMX Social Media in New York City. I’m attending the conference and am anxious to learn. It’s one of those agenda’s web geeks like me get jittery just thinking of all the cool stuff we’ll be able to absorb, discuss and blog about.
