If you’re in business and haven’t at least considered some sort of involvement then you could be missing out in a big way. Whether you’re a small business in a niche industry, a freelancer, or a globally recognized brand, there is almost always some space for discussing your service or product or just getting your brand out there.

Three steps to nailing channel strategy

Last week we had a great conversation about social media marketing being at risk because we are not yet nailing the content and listening side of the equation. I completely skipped channel relevance because I feel it is a bigger challenge. Having a strong channel strategy scares a lot of marketers because they know in their hearts that a solid approach to channels take more time and energy than they may be ready to commit.

I am here to tell you that these thoughts are partly true and partly false. You see, the mistake I think marketers make in channel strategy is a three-part problem. One, the belief that one status update fits all. Second, that all channels are created and function equally. And finally, that you have to be on ALL of them. Let’s break it down a bit.

Technology Is A Canvas, Not A Platform

The Comeback Kids

Last week, I found myself working on a strategy for MySpace. Yes, MySpace. The newest iteration of the old school social site ended its invitation-only private beta, coinciding with new co-owner Justin Timberlake launching his first single in over five years. The completely reimagined UX has gotten coverage by everyone from Mashable to Forbes.

Just the week prior, I was checking out rave reviews for the new iPhone app for Flickr, launched as part of Yahoo’s latest attempt to return to digital relevance.  It was a well-timed launch, coming just before the current front-runner in photo sharing platforms, Instagram, took a major misstep with their latest terms and conditions.

The Pinning of America

Pinterest was of keen interest as we formulated questions for the first quarterly execution of The Social Habit. And for very good reason: 2012 was the year Pinterest exploded and became not just big, but relevant in the digital marketing mix.

How relevant has been somewhat of a mystery until now. Our survey of 3,000+ Americans 12 and over shows that Pinterest is the third most popular social network for women aged 18-44. That’s significant.

If You Don’t Treat Social Media Like Sex, You’re Doing it Wrong.

I was at church when I got the idea for this article. It’s not as twisted as it may sound. You see, my wife and I went to hear psychologist, leadership consultant, and best-selling author Dr. Henry Cloud lead a marriage seminar. On day two, at about half past the second cup of coffee, we got into sex. The good doctor told us we need to have intercourse. Then he told us the definition of the word.
