Simple Efficiency Tweaks to Get More Done in Social Media

by · October 22, 2008

Okay, confession time:  I’m secretly a David Allen/GTD groupie.

I discovered Allen’s stuff several years ago, when I was the in-house marketing person at a large regional commercial construction company.  As basically a one-person marketing department, I had to juggle a lot of different priorities and tasks, and my workday was really unpredictable.  One day I might be editing video for the annual Christmas party, the next I might be writing radio copy or designing a print advertisement, and later that afternoon I’d be wrestling with nailing down invitations, RSVPs and other details for a customer appreciation golf outing (or acting as the “drink cart girl” at the same).

Is Social Media a Waste of Time, or What Are You Doing With Your Cognitive Surplus?

by · June 6, 2008

photo courtesy Craig Jewel @sxc.huWhen I try to explain to most folks what I do for a living, no matter how well I try to explain myself, I usually get the same response, which generally boils down to some variation of “So, you get paid to goof off on the internet, basically?”

It’s a fair statement, I suppose. Up till now, that’s how most businesses characterized social media participation: “goofing off on the internet.” It may still be how most businesses characterize social media activity.

Really Simple Syndication redefined web surfing for me. I’m convinced it can do the same for the rest of the world, whenever they come around to it. I’m even happy to spread the joy.

10 Steps To Manage Your Feed Reading Time

by · December 20, 2007

Two weeks ago I looked up from my feed reader and realized I’d been checking feeds for an hour and 12 minutes, non-stop. I was at work. There was a lot to do. And I wasn’t finished.

New Watch“Enough,” I thought. “I have got to get a grip on this. But how?”

RSS feeds can make surfing the web a much more productive and less time consuming activity. But, as I’ve found, they can also control the time you spend online if you let them. At the start of this process, I subscribed to 305 feeds and would routinely see 500-800 different posts per day. I’ve spent the last two weeks wrapping my brain around how to manage my RSS feeds, my time or both to optimize my web browsing experience.
