BREAKING: Dakar Rally Cancelled

by · January 4, 2008

After an excited post this morning about Robby Gordon and the Dakar Rally effort, this breaking news from Lisbon:

A.S.O. cancels the 2008 edition of the Dakar rally
After different exchanges with the French government – in particular the Ministry for Foreign Affairs – , and based on their firm recommendations, the organisers of the Dakar have taken the decision to cancel the 2008 edition of the rally, scheduled from the 5th to the 20th of January between Lisbon and Senegal’s capital.

More Social Media Kudos For Robby Gordon

by · January 4, 2008

Last November’s Beam Racing Baja Twitter Tracker was fun, innovative and interesting. It was one of the first uses of the popular social media tool to provide coverage of and communication about a sporting event, at least in an official way. Proudly, the social media thinking didn’t stop there for Robby Gordon Motorsports.

Tomorrow marks the beginning of the Dakar Rally, a three-week endurance off-road race tracing its course from Lisbon, Portugal to Dakar, Senegal. Robby Gordon became the first American to win a stage in the Dakar Rally last year. He’s hoping to become the first to win the whole thing this time around.

Twittering Success: Beam Baja Postmortem

by · December 10, 2007

My apologies for mum being the word on the Beam Baja Twitter Tracker project from last month. The project, which sent me to the Baja 1000 with Robby Gordon and his Monster Energy Trophy Truck where I Twittered updates from the clandestine off-road racing event, was a success. Or at least we think it was.

Beam Baja Twitter TrackerOur goal was to connect fans of Robby Gordon and off-road racing with (sort of) live updates from the duration of the Baja 1000, a race that typically runs 18-26 hours for the winning trucks. Run from Ensendada to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico along the Baja Peninsula, communications and race updates are usually hard to come by.

Plenty Of Prom Dates, Never Our Crush

by · November 14, 2007

Inevitably, when several pretty girls want to go to the prom with you, the one you want doesn’t. Such is life, I guess.

Our Baja 1000 Jim Beam Twitter Tracker, which at the time of this post was still on-going, got a lot of love from a lot of people in the days leading up to Tuesday’s start. The one noticeable blog that didn’t want to go a courtin’ with us? Twitter’s.

We’re hoping to provide some measurement to show the total picture of this particular social media effort in the next week or so. I’ll also try to work up a little video diary of our adventures as well. Photos from our Flickr are already up!

Now That’s Racin’

by · November 12, 2007

Very little time to write before we hop on the plane and head to Ensenada, Mexico for the start of the Baja 1000. So, I’m going to have to tell the story of today’s NASCAR adventure with my Flickr galleries.

Enjoy!

Join Me For Some Real Exploration

by · November 10, 2007

Social Media Explorer isn’t just the name of my blog, but also my job title. While I threw out the suggestion to Todd Spencer, Doe Anderson’s CEO, as a joke, he cocked his head and said, “I kind of like that.” My business cards arrived a few days later and have proven to be the perfect curiosity piece to engage folks in conversations about what I do.

The Baja Trophy Truck of Robby Gordon. This week, we payoff the promise of exploration with an adventure, both in social media and in the traditional, travel sense, as I take to both the Checker Auto Parts 500 NASCAR race at the Phoenix International Raceway and the Baja 1000 off-road race with Robby Gordon Motorsports and Jim Beam Racing.
