10 Better Ideas Than Looking at a Top 10 List for Advice

Top 10 lists are like new year’s resolutions. They seem great at first, but they quickly make you feel bored, hopeless, and like you’ve wasted your time.

And that’s usually because they are filled with things you know you should do but can’t commit to doing. They’re too aspirational. Too shoot-for-the-moon-y.

Which is why I’ve kept this one bare-bones, tactical, and hopefully useful for you beyond the 4 days it typically takes us to crash and burn through our empty new year promises.

The Future of How Google+ Will Impact Search Rankings

Back in August, I ran several experiments to try and find out whether Google’s +1s had an impact on search engine rankings. The results suggested that in almost all cases Google +1s did have a positive impact on rankings. However, a lot has changed in the past four months, so I’d like to share where I think Google is going with the impact of Google+ on search rankings.

No, I’m not writing a book on SEO, but I Erik Deckers and I have worked out a neat webinar for everyone. On Monday, we’ll join Jeremy Dearringer of Slingshot SEO for a webinar for his company that will also bring his expertise and knowledge on search engine optimization to bear on our seven business drivers of social media marketing. This is sure to be enlightening for everyone (including me) since it won’t be all focused on the book, but more on how search applies to our theories.

The Future of Content in SEO

Remember the old line “content is king”? For a long time in the SEO community we thought it was that easy.  Create good content and they (traffic, social, rankings) will come.  But is that still true with the rise of social, local and personalized search?  What about the recent Google Panda update?  Content “farming” as it’s called, was hit pretty hard by the Panda update and now companies are having to refocus their entire view of content creation as a viable SEO strategy.  There’s a big case for internet marketers to take their focus away from content since there are signs that content isn’t exactly “king” anymore.

Content is everywhere and has become a marketing sword for businesses of all shapes and sizes. As traditional advertising effectiveness declined, the popularity of writing articles and publishing articles went wild. It was for a while a fairly easy SEO trick and tool to help Move the Google Needle for more traffic to your web site.

Content Marketing still is one of the better tools in your bag of tricks, however getting folks to read your stuff gets harder every day as more and more things garnish our customers and prospects attention.

Google’s Big Play on Content Marketing, Influence & SEO

Google’s latest attempt at social networking has been the talk of most towns since it was first announced less than a month ago. What do I think? That Website Ain’t Gonna Visit Itself

If you build it, they will, well, probably go somewhere else.

Your target audience probably doesn’t share the same level of enthusiasm that you have toward your new website/redesign/mobile app/digital venture. More than likely, they won’t even notice. They’ll go about visiting their normal destinations online; checking Facebook, maybe Twitter, and dipping into their pool of RSS subscriptions.

But your target audience almost definitely won’t just come to your website because it happens to be there.

Launching your endeavor is a big first step. But it’s just the beginning of a long, long marathon.
