If you’re a hockey fan then this is your favorite time of the year. The season for you starts at the draft, works it’s way through training camp, peaks at the trading deadline, and then races to the start of the playoffs.

As a hockey fan, I’ve become intrigued by the marketing approach of the National Hockey League and its teams. It’s been interesting to see them implement social media initiatives to communicate and connect with their fan base. From Twitter profiles to Facebook fan pages and even audio and video podcasts, many teams have embraced social media 100 percent.

Social Media Club Names Interim Board

by · July 9, 2008

Social Media ClubThe announcement came today that the Social Media Club has named an interim Board of Directors to help determine the organizations strategic direction and advance its goals. Chris Heuer and Kristie Wells, two of my favorite people in the world, have asked me, along with 41 others, to be a part of this direction-setting body. I am honored and hope to contribute something meaningful to the national body as it becomes more whole and well-defined.

The Thirst For Learning Social Media

by · January 24, 2008

NOTE: This is a combination post for Social Media Explorer and smclouisville.wordpress.com.

The precedent for inaugural gatherings of local Social Media Club chapters, at least from my anecdotal gatherings, is to invite a bunch of people, open the doors and see who shows up. Last night, my friend Todd Earwood and I did that in Louisville. We emailed several folks in the market we thought might be interested, started a Facebook group, posted a few blog entries talking about it and crossed our fingers.

Taking Louisville’s Web Community Off-Line

by · January 3, 2008

We talk a lot in the social media space about building communities. I’ve long had the theory that the organizations, corporations, brands and even individuals who will survive the ebb and flow of the Internet as a business are the online communities we can migrate off-line. For it is there, with real people, face-to-face, that a higher value can come from a community.

Louisville just so happens to be a blossoming community of social media thinkers, internet marketers, web geeks, dynamic developers and so on. If some of you big city folk are skeptical of us in the “aw, shucks” states, here’s a brief list of what Louisville has to offer in terms of social media talent:
