On Entrepreneurship, Success, Failure and Personal Branding

by · December 1, 2014

My hope when starting Social Media Explorer in 2007 (as a blog … it later became a business) was to build a brand that could survive without me.  Success came in 2012 as I stepped away and Nichole Kelly and team took over the agency side of the business so I could focus on events. Then in late 2012, I completely stepped away for a new challenge at CafePress.

United Way – #GivingTuesday

by · October 29, 2013

With an average of 500 nonprofits starting in the United States each year since 1996, it can be dizzying to know where to give your hard earned money.

You can go through the process of checking financials on a site like, interviewing board members and staff, and checking news stories. But that takes a lot of time.

An alternative is to let your local United Way.

Let the United Way do the vetting

United Way for #GivingTuesday on SocialMediaExplorerThe nearly 1800 local United Ways work in 45 countries and territories to better their communities. Each United Way collaborates with thousands of volunteers to vet nonprofits so you don’t have to. These volunteers are

The Difference In Me and SME

by · December 3, 2012

Social Media Explorer is a growing enterprise. No, not in the, “We’ve got 10,000 employees,” sense of the word, but this blog-turned-business is doing quite well, I’m thankful to report.

I’ve had several conversations recently which insinuated that I am Social Media Explorer and, conversely, SME is me. If that were the case, it would have gone out of business a long time ago. I’m clever, but not that good. Heh.

Social Media Explorer Wins GLI Inc.Credible Award!

by · September 13, 2012

From the beginning, our mission at Social Media Explorer has been to help businesses of all sizes use technology and innovation to grow and prosper.

The Louisville chamber of commerce, Greater Louisville, Inc., is also a tremendous resource and supporter for business growth in the local community. In a metro that is home to companies as large as Yum!, Humana, GE, Papa John’s and UPS, you might think small business would be easily overlooked by the area chamber. But you would be wrong.

Since 2000, Greater Louisville Inc. has highlighted the outstanding Louisville small business ecosystem with the Inc.credible Awards, which recognize top small businesses in a number of categories.

What A Little App That Could Means For Social Media Explorer

by · July 31, 2012

If you haven’t seen the new iPhone app Over, you really should. It’s the brainchild of Aaron Marshall, my business partner at Social Media Explorer. Yes, I’ve helped push it along and promote it to my networks, but technically I have nothing to do with its success.

In fact, Over has taken off so well that Aaron and I are parting ways so he can build more and focus on the app and its parent company, Potluck. It’s a bittersweet move for both of us … we’ve had a lot of fun building some neat things together at SME … but he has hit upon something that no friend in his right mind would hold him back from.

The Kat’s Out of The Bag

by · July 16, 2012

I’m happy to let everyone know that today Social Media Explorer welcomes back Kat French. For those of you who are long-time readers of SME, you’ll remember Kat was my first hire at Doe-Anderson and served that agency well as social media manager for several years. She’s most recently been at Louisville digital marketing agency Makespace, which I hear isn’t all that upset with me for convincing her to come back. (Thanks/Sorry guys!)

Social Media Explorers Head to Nashville

by · April 12, 2012

Editor’s Note: Andrea Cook has joined the writing staff here at SME as our event correspondent. She will be blogging and Tweeting from Explore Nashville tomorrow (and is even being trusted with my Twitter account to share insights from the day). So to introduce her, I thought she should write a little preview of what she’s expecting tomorrow. She’s a little gratuitous on making me sound good below, but she’ll get over that as she gets to know me better. Heh. Enjoy!

Watching Me Blog

by · April 10, 2012

Mitch Joel tagged me in a meme. I know. How very MySpace of him. Heh.

Last week he wrote a neat post over at Six Pixels of Separation in an answer to a commentor who wanted to know more about how he, Mitch Joel, blogs. It’s always neat to peek behind the curtains a bit and see what others use or do to spur their creative process, so I read the post (as I do with most of Mitch’s).

Follow Explore Events With

by · February 17, 2012

As you know, today is the kickoff of Social Media Explorer’s five city event series as Explore Dallas-Fort Worth gets underway at Union Station in Dallas. We’ve put a lot of thought and work into shaping an event that will serve professional marketers with rich, strategic-level content to help enhance their digital marketing efforts. (Notice I didn’t say just social media.)

And while these events (learn more about the four other cities and sign up for email notifications for the city of your interest on our Explore events page) are not yet being live streamed or offered up on a virtual format, you can still follow along.
