Sprucing Up Social Media Explorer

by · December 3, 2009

Welcome to the new design for Social Media Explorer. I know, it doesn’t look all that different, but I needed to put a new coat of paint on the walls and move some furniture around.

Since the majority of you reading this might be interested (not many first time visitors or newcomers will care), I thought I’d tell you a bit about the changes and why. Perhaps it can inspire some ideas in rethinking your own blog or website. If you don’t care much, just skip this post and thanks for stopping by.

The Power of New

by · July 24, 2009

This was going to be a difficult post to write. Then I decided to emphasize the new, not the old.

I set out next week on a new venture. New because a new professional challenge beckoned me. New because a tired mind begged me. New because too many voices, only a few of them my own, demanded it.

sme-logo-for-black-bgrdBeginning Monday, I am Jason Falls, Principal of Social Media Explorer LLC, a communications consultancy. My services will be available to clients looking for senior level strategy and consultation for their social media, public relations, marketing and communications efforts. I will no longer be officially affiliated with Doe-Anderson, though I will continue to work with them on selected projects and, without hesitation, refer companies to them.

Here’s To Knowing Your Audience

by · September 30, 2008

The first rule of communications, and thus the first rule of social media, is to know your audience. While I can draw anecdotal conclusions about you from comments, reaction, in-bound links and more, I don’t really have a whole lot of information about you.

Because I’m going through the thought process of a reorganization and redesign of Social Media Explorer, I’d like to zero in on you and your expectations of the content you find here. Feel free to offer as much or as little as you’d like in the comments, but please take a moment to answer this question so I can get a better understanding of what type of content we should focus on:

A New Look, A New Outlook

by · March 29, 2008

Social Media Explorer LogoWelcome to the new look of Social Media Explorer. No, the layout hasn’t really changed, but we now have a logo and we no longer have our masthead in the clouds, even if there is a funky image cut-off I’m still trying to fix. The change comes on the heels of several months of changes for me and some I think you’ll either notice, or find refreshing if you’re a regular reader of this blog.

Who Do You Want To See On SME TV?

by · March 4, 2008

Social Media Explorer TVGoing to South by Southwest this weekend offers me the opportunity to gather some great insights and interviews for this blog. There are, frankly, too many cool people, applications and companies to document and investigate, so I’d like your help.

Social Media Explorer TV (that YouTubey thing over there in the side bar) has offered what I think are some strong insights into some interesting topics in the world of social media. I’m taking my camera to Austin and want to interview as many folks as I can but would rather interview the people, talk about the companies and learn about the applications you want to learn about.

Best Of Social Media Explorer: January

by · February 1, 2008

Alas, the first month of the year is behind us and, yes, there’s still a football game or two to be played. Well, it’s better than hockey playoffs in June and the NBA Finals in July.

In an effort to better catalog the most useful posts offered up here on Social Media Explorer, here’s a list of last month’s top trafficked offerings:

  1. New Version Of Social Media Release Lacks Essentials
  2. Google Conspiracy Theory New Search Marketer Tactic
  3. Making Waves In Social Media
  4. New Social Bookmarking Submission Tool Worth Trying
  5. Holy Fark! Drew Curtis On Fark, Digg, Alexa & More

Holy Fark! Drew Curtis On Fark, Digg, Alexa And More

by · January 28, 2008

Drew Curtis certainly holds nothing back. In this, the first of a multi-part series on Social Media Explorer TV, the Fark.com founder and grand poobah waxes poetic on Fark, Digg, Alexa and more. A word of warning: The interview includes colorful language, so don’t jack up the volume at work or in front of the kids.

Part 2 of the Holy Fark! series is scheduled for Wednesday. In it Drew talks about his book, “It’s Not News, It’s Fark: How Mass Media Tries To Pass Off Crap As News.” Learn more and order your copy here.

Plenty Of Prom Dates, Never Our Crush

by · November 14, 2007

Inevitably, when several pretty girls want to go to the prom with you, the one you want doesn’t. Such is life, I guess.

Our Baja 1000 Jim Beam Twitter Tracker, which at the time of this post was still on-going, got a lot of love from a lot of people in the days leading up to Tuesday’s start. The one noticeable blog that didn’t want to go a courtin’ with us? Twitter’s.

We’re hoping to provide some measurement to show the total picture of this particular social media effort in the next week or so. I’ll also try to work up a little video diary of our adventures as well. Photos from our Flickr are already up!
