ReGeneration Catching On At SXSW

by · March 11, 2008

Dell is behind a community of environmentally-conscious friends called ReGeneration. They stopped me between sessions at South by Southwest (SXSW) this weekend and asked what I was doing to look out for the environment. Here’s the video. I’m proud to be featured first in a compilation of answers from great folks.

Honestly, I’m not doing nearly enough to look out for the environment. None of us are. It might be the single most important thing we all take for granted. So let this community serve as a social media mechanism (tool) that serves as a reminder to us all. Join ReGeneration. Stay up to date with their happenings by subscribing to their RSS feed. If anything, it at least will help remind us more frequently to pay attention to the way we treat Mother Earth.

The Marketing Of No Marketing At SXSW

by · March 10, 2008

There might be a social post later, but the “Self-Replicating Awesomeness, The Marketing Of No Marketing,” session is worth a post of its own. In my opinion, six of the top social media and community building minds on the planet were panelists. There’s too much knowledge there to just mention it.

Scott MontyStowe Boyd and I joined up with Kristie Wells to go to the session, which was weird since it featured her husband, Chris Heuer, along with Jeremiah Owyang, Hugh MacLeod, Deb Schultz and Tara Hunt and moderated by David Parmet. The framework for the conversation was to find out how to market into a community without being overbearing like traditional advertising and how to build community around a product.

SXSW Sunday

by · March 9, 2008

The problem with conferences like South by Southwest (SXSW) is that you need 36 hours in a day. When Shawn Morton, Richard McInnis and I got on the elevator last night with Robert Scoble and Rocky Barbanica, Smorty very eloquently pointed out we needed to account for daylight savings time and spring forward. You could see the last threads of enthusiasm sputtering out of Scoble’s body. The guy was exhausted and that additional hour of sleep would have done us all good.

Saturday SXSW Social Media Exploration

by · March 8, 2008

Saturday brought forth another great day of learning, networking and fun at South by Southwest (SXSW). It started with a social media breakfast that, because of the crowded restaurant and waiting list for seats, forced me to grab three random people I didn’t know to join me at my table. The result was three new contacts in the web world and some great stories.

Socializing At SXSW

by · March 8, 2008

Day one at South by Southwest (SXSW) couldn’t have been more fun or productive. My Flickr set documents some of the happenings. The video below puts the icing on the cake.

New Media Jim, Chris Heuer, Kristie Wells and meShawn Morton, a/k/a Smorty and proprietor of Profilactic, one of the first and still the best (IMHO) lifestreaming platform on the web, and I boarded our plane just before the biggest blizzard in decades hit Louisville. After puddle-jumping to Birmingham, then Houston, then Austin, we jumped into SXSW socializing full force.

Who Do You Want To See On SME TV?

by · March 4, 2008

Social Media Explorer TVGoing to South by Southwest this weekend offers me the opportunity to gather some great insights and interviews for this blog. There are, frankly, too many cool people, applications and companies to document and investigate, so I’d like your help.

Social Media Explorer TV (that YouTubey thing over there in the side bar) has offered what I think are some strong insights into some interesting topics in the world of social media. I’m taking my camera to Austin and want to interview as many folks as I can but would rather interview the people, talk about the companies and learn about the applications you want to learn about.

SXSW Offers The Best Networking: Off-Line

by · February 29, 2008

Brian Solis, Chris Heuer and Jason Falls networkingIf there’s one thing I’ve done well professionally through the years is network. A year ago, no one in the social media space, or among national thought leaders on public relations (the basis of my professional discipline) knew who the hell I was. Two years ago, no one in the Louisville market did. Granted, much of that is because I spent 11 years a sports information director and existed in the parallel college athletics universe, but my experience connecting with people professionally through personal interaction has served me well.
