I’m very excited and thankful to the team here for asking me to take part in the new #GivingTuesday initiative where every week a new organization or charity will be profiled that is worthy of your attention and donations.
There are so many great organizations out there that need your help and each of you should consider checking out Charity Navigator to discover ones that fit your passions and personal areas of interest. Plus, they do a great job of highlighting how and where your money is put to use to help you make informed donation decisions.
I’m a big supporter of our military and any charity that helps soldiers and their families.
Several years ago I discovered the Fisher House Foundation.
You know how Ronald McDonald Houses are built so that families can be near their sick children when they are going through treatment? That is what Fisher House does, except their focus is on the families of wounded soldiers. There are currently 58 Fisher Houses with many more planned.
There is at least one Fisher House at every major military medical center. Annually, the Fisher House program serves more than 17,000 families, and have made available over four million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990. By law, there is no charge for any family to stay at a Fisher House operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs; and Fisher House Foundation uses donations to reimburse the individual Fisher Houses operated by the Army, Navy, and Air Force. No family pays to stay at any Fisher House!
I’m hoping to finally visit my local Fisher House in the coming months. It is something I’ve always wanted to do and I know it’ll confirm that my yearly donations are going to great use. Plus, I know that if given the opportunity to talk to some of the families who my dollars have helped will commit me more than every to keep giving.
Please consider donating to Fisher House to help them continue to serve our nation’s soldiers who have done so much for us. We owe them more than we can ever pay and every dollar does help!
